Report for 2006

Richard Bona

This year's JVC Jazz Festival Warsaw got off to a magical start with saxophonist Branford Marsalis' October 24th concert at Torwar. Marsalis' brilliant quartet, composed of pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts has been working together for many years. The quartet's flawless statements of theme and melody moved gracefully into fluent improvisation time and again, enchanting the audience of over 1500 who gave them a much-deserved standing ovation. The concert opened with a strong performance by the Polish singer Aga Zaryan and her band.

Sala Kongresowa

The festival continued at the majestic Sala Kongresowa the following Saturday with a performance by Cassandra Wilson and her new band.

Cassandra has played Poland many times and is a favorite in Warsaw. She did not disappoint. Featured solo instrumentation included Gregoire Maret's chromatic harmonica and Marvin Sewell's atmospheric guitar, both of which dazzled the audience.

Matthew Shipp

After the show, many festival-goers headed over to club Krolikarnia to see an impressive double bill: genre-defying solo improviser Matthew Shipp and the free jazz of "Trio X" featuring saxophonist Joe McPhee, Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen.
