The 50th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, which George Wein founded as the world's first outdoor festival devoted entirely to jazz, was celebrated.
The 20th anniversary of the JVC Jazz Festival, which began in 1984, also made 2004 a very special year.
In Newport, from the 11th to 15th of August, memorial events were held at 6 venues. Many legendary artists as well as popular, younger artists performed and the festival has never had more variety than this year.
The JVC Jazz Festival in Tokyo was held for the first time in Japan. Artists from both abroad and Japan performed to an excited crowd. In addition, a photo exhibition featuring 20 years of JVC Jazz Festival history was on display in the hall.
On the 18th of May, the great jazz drummer Elvin Jones died of heart disease at a hospital in New Jersey, and on June 10th, the legendary and incomparable musician Ray Charles passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, LA.
